The Workshops

We’re inviting local residents to take part in a free creative workshop to help shape the mural design.

You do not need to be artistic or have any creative experience to take part!

The workshops will be relaxed, friendly and open to everyone. There will be simple creative activities, conversations and opportunities to share ideas, stories and artwork that could become part of the final mural design.

The ideas gathered during these workshops will directly help shape the artwork.

Free to attend

The Idea

Lochee has a long history of people coming from different places to build a life here. From Irish and Highland families who came to work in the mills, to more recent arrivals from across Europe and Africa, the area has always been shaped by movement, change and new beginnings.

Lochee History Group decided that the aim of this mural is to recognise and celebrate that - and to create something that feels welcoming, inclusive and relevant to the people who live here now.

Our proposal was to create a design that will divide the walls into a series of flowing, organic panels. Rather than rigid boxes, these sections will curve and weave across the surface, creating dynamic movement.

Panels will represent different aspects of Lochee’s story, structured in a broadly linear timeline around the building.

This interwoven design will reflect connection and the idea that change is ongoing and that communities are shaped through interaction rather than separation.

The overall style will be fresh, vibrant and colourful - contemporary yet warm and friendly!

How it all started...

This project began with a simple idea from the Lochee History Group, who meet regularly at Lochee Library.

Alongside Dundee City Council’s Housing Team, they wanted to create something meaningful for the area - an artwork that reflects both Lochee’s past and the community that lives here today.

A call went out to artists to submit ideas for the mural, and we were really pleased to be selected for the project, based on our experience working on community-led murals and creative projects across Dundee.

From the start, it’s been clear that this isn’t just about creating a piece of artwork - it’s about working with local people to make something together.
